“Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire” St Catherine of Siena

Our Careers Education, Information, Advice, and Guidance becomes regular and personalised in Years 12 and 13. From the first day of Sixth Form, our full-time dedicated Careers Advisor is actively involved in guiding students. Tailored 1:1 support helps them choose the right subject combinations, ensuring they achieve the highest possible grades. We aim to put students in a strong position, equipping them with the confidence to take their next steps after leaving school.

All students receive up-to-date advice on apprenticeships, are encouraged to build employability skills through workshops and relevant work experience, and have access to Unifrog, our one-stop careers platform, for current labour market information. In Year 12, students begin researching university courses, receiving guidance to select the best university and course to pursue their chosen path. They are encouraged to engage in ‘super-curricular’ activities, going beyond the classroom, and are supported through the UCAS application process, including writing their personal statement.

We offer early support for applications to Oxford, Cambridge, and competitive courses such as medicine, dentistry, and veterinary science. We’re proud to have connections with Homerton College, Cambridge, and Somerville College, Oxford. Each year, 80-90% of our Sixth Formers secure places at top universities of their choice.

In addition, we offer informal Careers Insight lunchtime sessions, where students meet professionals from diverse fields. Recent guests have included a Graphic Designer, Government Lawyer, Engineer, Brand Writer, BBC Broadcaster, NHS Midwife, Physiotherapist, Cyber Security Advisor, AI Expert, Data Analyst, and an Armed Response Police Officer – just to name a few!

There are also numerous opportunities designed to inspire our Year 12 and 13 students, including the Raising the Bar legal skills programme, Step2Med for aspiring medics, The Young Reporter Scheme, Young Enterprise, UCL’s Orbyts young scientist research programme, Green Careers Week, Microsoft & ED&I Programme, Maths4Girls events like our visit to Goldman Sachs, SkyUp Academy, Future Leaders UK Programme, The Brilliant Club, as well as the UCAS Discovery and What Uni? What Career? exhibitions in London… and the list keeps growing!

Mrs. Clare Dewar, our Careers Advisor, is always available to support any student in navigating this important next step. Students and parents can reach her at cdewar3@holycross.kingtston.sch.uk.
